Руководство СССР в течение всей советской истории прилагало усилия для повышения образовательного уровня населения. Так было и в 1960-е гг., когда правительством была поставлена задача перехода к всеобщему среднему образованию. В статье с опорой на данные переписей населения 1959 и 1970 гг. проанализировано произошедшее в межпереписной период изменение образовательного уровня населения Свердловской области. Сделаны выводы о росте как общего уровня образованности населения, так и доли лиц со средним и высшим образованием. Рост был более интенсивным у женщин, нежели у мужчин, и на селе, нежели в городе. При этом по сравнению с РСФСР в области был более интенсивным рост доли лиц со средним общим и неполным средним образованием. Однако доля лиц с высшим и средним специальным образованием росла менее интенсивно, и по этим показателям область усилила отставание от РСФСР.

The leadership of the USSR throughout the entire Soviet history made efforts to improve the educational level of the population. So it was in the 1960s, when the government set the task of transition to universal secondary education. Based on the data of the population censuses of 1959 and 1970, the article analyzes the change in the educational level of the population of the Sverdlovsk region that occurred during the intercensal period. Conclusions are drawn about the growth of both the general level of education of the population and the proportion of people with secondary and higher education. Growth was more intense in women than in men and in the countryside than in the cities. At the same time, in comparison with the RSFSR, the growth in the proportion of people with secondary general and incomplete secondary education was more intensive in the region. However, the proportion of people with higher and secondary specialized education grew less intensively. And according to these indicators, the region widened the gap from the RSFSR.
