Художник Павел Егорович Щербов хранил у себя документы семьи графа Варфоломея Васильевича Толстого, часть из них позже была передана в музей, а другая попала в тайники, обнаруженные в 2019 и 2022 гг. Некая связь между семьей художника и семьей графа В. В. Толстого отмечалась ранее, но не была определена и изучена. Исследование направлено на построение научной гипотезы о родстве семьи художника П. Е. Щербова с семьей графа Варфоломея Васильевича Толстого. Гипотеза опирается на документальные источники XVIII—XIX вв., обнаруженные в тайниках усадьбы П. Е. Щербова, а также на документы, входящие в музейный фонд РФ, архивные и справочные материалы. В ходе исследования выявлены биографические сведения о графе В. В. Толстом, его родительской семье, его жене А. П. Толстой и детях Анне и Дмитрии. Также установлено, что отец художника, Егор Васильевич, являлся незаконнорожденным сыном графа Д. В. Толстого, который сам был побочным сыном графа В. В. Толстого. Среди прочего сделано предположение о личности матери Егора Васильевича.

The artist Pavel Yegorovich Shcherbov kept the documents of the family of Count Bartholomew Vasilyevich Tolstoy, some of them were later transferred to the museum, and others got into the caches discovered in 2019 and 2022. A certain connection between the artist’s family and the family of Count V. V. Tolstoy was noted earlier, but has not been determined and studied. The research is aimed at building a scientific hypothesis about the relationship of the family of the artist P. E. Shcherbov with the family of Count Bartholomew Vasilyevich Tolstoy. The hypothesis is based on documentary sources of the XVIII—XIX centuries, found in the caches of the estate of P. E. Shcherbov, as well as documents included in the museum fund of the Russian Federation, archival and reference materials. The study revealed biographical information about Count V. V. Tolstoy, his parental family, his wife A. P. Tolstaya and his children Anna and Dmitry. It is also established that the artist’s father, Yegor Vasilyevich, was the illegitimate son of Count D. V. Tolstoy, who himself, in turn, was the illegitimate son of Count V. V. Tolstoy. Among other things, an assumption was made about the identity of Yegor Vasilyevich’s mother.
